Why we made CLOS CIEN

Most people who love wine never get to create it.

They know their regions. They’ve visited the great estates. They can tell you why a wine from Rioja Alavesa drinks differently to one from the Rioja Alta.

But when it comes to making a wine of their own, one that carries their name, reflects their taste, gets passed around a table with a proper story behind it.

The door stays closed. It isn’t lack of passion.

It’s everything else that gets in the way of it.

What people want is to create something. Something with their name on it. Something worth opening on a special occasion and worth explaining when you do.

That’s what CLOS CIEN is for.

We work in La Rioja, in vineyards planted between 1945 and 1990.

This is not replanted commercial land. The region has produced two wines with perfect Parker scores. Spanish wines have doubled in value since 2014. None of that is why our members join. But it is worth knowing.

What we promise is simpler than a return.

Your vineyard plot, GPS-mapped and yours alone. Your wine, made to your decisions with guidance from people who know exactly what they’re doing. Your bottles, with your label on them. And the kind of story that changes how a dinner table feels.

We handle everything else.

More than a vineyard.
A place you’ll visit again and again.

Membership puts you in La Rioja four seasons a year, if you want it.

The villages, the restaurants that don’t take reservations, the local festivals, the bars that have been there since before the vines were planted.

The wine is what you’re making. The rest is what you’re living.

The vines are carefully pruned and stripped back to their oldest wood. You wouldn’t know they were alive if you didn’t know to look.

The first green buds push through in March and April. Two weeks early this year. The Tempranillo is showing well and the villages look idyllic in the spring sun.

Long evenings. The kind of light that makes everything look like a painting. The decisions that will determine your vintage start being made now.

Harvest. The decision of when to pick. Your hands in the fruit your vines produced. A table outside with a glass of last year’s wine and nowhere to be.

Your vineyard, your scale.

Each membership gives you a GPS-mapped plot of La Rioja vineyard and a guaranteed annual allocation of wine made under your own label. The difference is scale and involvement.

Ignacio Miguel del Campo

Ignacio has worked Rioja Alavesa for over thirty years. He knows these specific plots, this specific soil, and what each parcel is capable of producing. Your vineyard is in his hands between your visits.

Jaione Ruiz de Vinaspre

Jaione leads production from harvest through to bottling. She works with each member on the decisions that shape what ends up in your glass: fermentation style, ageing, blending. Her knowledge of the region is deep and her approach is precise
